My brother's memorial was held at the Bicycle Inn outside of Bakersville, North Carolina. It was a spectacular showing on a crisp, sunny December afternoon. Caleb would have been embarrassed that we had all his stuff on display, but I think he would have appreciated the turnout. It was a celebration of his life rather than a mourning of his passing. Of course, there were many tears, but there were also family and old friends to bring the smiles back with handshakes and hugs. I think it would have made him happy.

We had a giant corkboard hanging at the inn where we displayed various pictures of Caleb, some of his "earlier" works of art, his birth certificate and all sorts of other stuff.

I am sure we could have kept going. Much like this website, there was just so many things we wanted to show and not nearly enough room.
East Carolina University, Caleb's alma mater, has set up a one-time scholarship fund in his name. If you would like to contribute, please send your donation to The East Carolina School of Art, Attention LouAnne Hager, Greenville, NC 27858. Make checks payable to "ECU Foundation" and include "Caleb Dowd" in the memo area. The deadline for submission is February 29. The award will be presented to a student at the undergraduate show in March.

My brother Abraham said that, "If everyone Caleb knew at school contributed only $1, that would be around $400 right there." As of the first of February, the fund has reached over $1,600.
